Equality Illinois, a state LGBT civil rights group, will honor with its Freedom Award the late Mark Beaubien Jr., who served as a Republican state representative, for his 15 years advocating equality in Springfield.
CEO Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of Equality Illinois, said, “Beaubien stood up time and time again to combat injustice and prejudice, and he offered a loud, eloquent, and passionate voice for LGBT equality that inspired fair-minded Illinoisans all across the state. His legacy is a blessing for us all.”
Beaubien, who died last June, was first elected to the Illinois House in 1996.
Wife Dee Beaubien will accept the award during EI’s annual Justice for All gala on Feb. 11 in Chicago. Of her husband, she said, “He remains an example of all that could be right about politics: serving, giving back, keeping your word even if it isn’t politically correct or popular, a sense of humor even in the most difficult times, and most importantly, believing in the right of individuals to live according to their own values.
