411 ON CANDIDATES: The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin recently published a voter guide to the 2018 elections, which includes answers from gubernatorial candidates in the Democratic primary. DEFUND DHS: The American Civil Liberties encourages supporters to call their U.S. senators and ask them to support the campaign to strip the Department of Homeland Security of taxpayer funding because of the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies. Here’s a sample script: “Hi, my name is (your name) and my ZIP code is (your ZIP code). DIVE INTO THE RIVER: Milwaukee Water Commons, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Sea Grant University of Wisconsin and the Harbor District are working with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Milwaukee Marine Police to present the 2018 Cream City Classic. The race, set for Aug. 11 and beginning at the Erie Street pier, is billed as “Milwaukee’s first open river swim.” A goal is to promote water education and recreation and eventually raise money to ensure all neighborhoods have access to pools and swimming lessons. ON THE MENU: Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch guides provide at-a-glance information on which fish is relatively abundant (OK to eat) and which species are overfished (need to avoid). The guides also indicate which types of seafood contain levels of mercury or PCBs that pose health risks. Some local seafood restaurants carry the guides and they can be downloaded from the web.
