Great Lakes region Adopt-a-Beach cleanup slated for September
September Adopt-a-Beach, the largest annual day of action for the Great Lakes, will take place Saturday, Sept. 17, according to the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The cleanups will take place on beaches and shorelines in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Minnesota's event will be held on Sept. 24.
During the Adopt-a-Beach cleanup, thousands of volunteers cleanup beaches around the Great Lakes while collecting valuable data used by researchers. The Alliance for the Great Lakes says this results in cleaner beaches and data on pollution sources that can be used to develop solutions to pollution problems.
The events are held as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, a global event. New and returning volunteers are needed for the September Adopt-a-Beach events, with details varying by location.
